West Derby Road Consultation

Liverpool City Council has a proposal for a temporary cycle route on West Derby Road, to replace the one previously removed.
Closing date for comments Friday 7th January 2022
https://liverpool.gov.uk/wdrcycling

The main danger point for cyclists is crossing Sheil Road

The consultation is badly designed, with only the options of either agreeing with the plan or disagreeing with it.

The design for crossing Sheil Road creates dangerous condition for cyclists.
Cyclists join West Derby Road on a cycle lane segregated with wands and into a bike box at the traffic lights.
The width if the cycle lane is not marked, it’s impossible to know if it will be a safe and useable width.
Cyclists are now to the left side of left-turning motor vehicles with obvious potential conflicts. A cyclist carrying straight on is in danger of being hit by a left-turning motor vehicle.
Across the other side of the junction a segregated lane is marked as 1.25m wide, which is below the standard for cycling next to fast moving motor vehicles.

The junction needs dedicated traffic lights for cyclists and a cycle lane of 2m width.

As it stands, the only response to this consultation is to disagree with the creation of this cycle route.

  • March moves at 12.30
  • Liverpool cathedral joining point approx 1pm

There is a lot of emphasis on it being family-friendly, positive, with creative ideas to make various points about protecting the environment. Music, dance, art, T-shirts, banners. There will be stewards and first-aiders.

Cycling Peloton

Meet at Sefton Park at midday for a 12.30pm ride start.

MCC member Derek Gould will be taking those that can join him on a fantastic route of Liverpool. You will leave the main march at Sefton Park, take in parts of Liverpool then rejoin the march at St. Lukes (the Bombed Out Church) at approximately 1.30pm. Here, cyclists can walk in unison with the rest of the campaigners to Derby Square where speeches will take place.

Here is the route:

  • Out of Sefton Park past the Obelisk towards Sefton Park Road.
  • Cross the park perimeter road carefully!
  • Use the mandatory cycle lane to go through the Park Gates ahead but turn half left at the traffic lights towards Princes Park.
  • At 100 yards lies a quiet T junction – turn left here, where Princes Park gates now lie ahead.
  • Go through these gates and immediately go right to cross a main pathway, then go left to travel clockwise around the lake (the lake is on your right) for 200 yards.
  • Take the wider walkway ahead that runs straight across, through the Park’s fields to a driveway and up to some gates on right and left. Go through the gates on the right and go up to the main road (Devonshire Rd).
  • Cross this road around the bollards and into Admiral Street which lies ahead. Ride for about 1 mile along Admiral street taking great care when crossing a wide road half-way along. The huge cathedral is unmistakably straight ahead of you.
  • At the end of Admiral Street there is a Toucan Crossing across Parliament Street. Press the button and cross when this is green for bikes. Go onto the pavement opposite and turn left down the hill on the walkway; if you are uncomfortable with this, dismount and push your bike.
  • Ride into the Cathedral’s rear driveway on your right and go ahead to cross the car park with the Cathedral on your right. There is an event happening nearby.
  • When we are to move off, leave the car park by the gates (note there is a barrier here) at the opposite side of the car park to where you entered.
  • Ahead is a curved, short roadway that takes you up to some traffic lights. When these are green, go straight ahead into Rodney Street. Go carefully along Rodney Street to the next set of lights where, when green, we turn left.
  • Go 200 yards down the hill to the next traffic lights where we dismount and go onto the pavement; this is the famous burnt-out-church, St.Lukes.

People Pedal Power Event

• Do you care about people, planet and the future?
• Do you want to hold our decision makers and big corporations to account, and ask them to create the change our climate desperately needs?
• Do you want our fossil-fuel guzzling transport system to be reformed?
• Can you cycle a few miles?

If so, lets get the powerful message of climate action and people power to the critical decision makers at COP26. Join the #ride2COP26, a movement of individuals travelling to COP26 purely powered by ourselves and our trusty two-wheeled-steeds.
Rain of shine (you really can’t trust the Great British weather!) the ride will be full of colour and joy as individuals come together to create collective change and climate action.

One mile or 50, anyone is welcome to join the movement as we wind our way towards Glasgow in the weeks leading up to COP26 (31st Oct-12th November 2021). Think of it like a ‘tag team’ – people joining the ride for a few miles as it passes their area!

Members of MCC will join the ride at Warrington, riding onwards to Lancaster. For information contact Don Thompson theroost95@btinternet.com

Active Travel Protest Liverpool

Saturday 25 September 2021
12 noon

In eight years, 1118 cyclists and pedestrians have been killed or seriously injured in Liverpool. That’s one cyclist or pedestrian per road kilometre. While some new cycle lanes have been installed, they have not created a coherent network, while the dismantling of the West Derby cycle lane sends the wrong message about who is given priority in road safety planning.

The protest is to commemorate those injured and killed and to demand safer travel.

This is how it works: cycle or walk from across the city towards the Pier Head. Meet friends on the way, become a group, and show that you are cycling or walking for a reason (feel free to decorate your bike or bring a poster). Wear a purple top. Bring bells. All meet at the Pier Head at 12 noon on 25 September.

Show the city that we exist, that we matter and that we want to be able to use the roads and pavements safely, and that there are many who would love to use active travel if only – if only active travel was safe. For us, for our kids, for the climate, for our future.

Hosted by Liverpool Cycling Campaign

Confirmed speakers – Councillor Tom Crone, Dr Kay Inckle, Councillor Jay Roberts and Councillor Kris Brown.
